Rocket Motor Nomenclature

This page provides the Rocket Motor Simulation Module user with an overview of the key components of a rocket motor.

The figure below shows a cross section of a typical rocket motor assembly and identifies the key component parts.

The Rocket Motor Nozzle expands the combustion chamber gas from chamber pressure to atmospheric pressure, causing the gas to accelerate.

The Rocket Motor Grain is the solid fuel and oxidizer mix which provides the pressure and thrust to the rocket structure.

The Igniter/Booster is an energetic component used to initiate combustion of the rocket motor grain.

The Warhead is the rocket payload to be delivered to the target. In this figure, only a portion of the warhead is shown.
