The Empirical Interior Ballistics module is fairly simple and is used to estimate muzzle velocity for a desired peak chamber pressure and defined barrel parameters. It requires knowledge of only a few parameters to obtain a reasonable estimate of expected muzzle velocity.

The Numerical Integration Interior Ballistics is a much more sophisticated analytical routine requiring more detailed knowledge of the ignitor characteristics, propellant geometry and thermochemistry, and gun parameters. The Numerical Integration Interior Ballistics module is used to:

• Select appropriate propellant solutions for the projectile.
• Compute the complete pressure-time history in the gun chamber during projectile in bore travel.
• Compute instantaneous projectile velocity, acceleration, and spin rate as a function of in bore time and travel.
• Compute rotating band wear, torque, and spin acceleration as a function of in bore time and travel.
• Compare band wear, torque, spin acceleration in a new barrel and a worn barrel.
