Determining Spring Stiffness Values

Spring stiffness values for both the projectile bore riding locations and the recoil and gun tube supports can be computed via an external simulation or analysis or can be determined via testing.

For this example, a finite element model of the forward section of a single sabot petal was created and a 10000 lb load was applied at the bore riding location (as shown below). The analysis results were interrogated to determine the deflection of the bore riding surface in order to compute a spring stiffness.
