BALANS has the capability of performing two types of analysis, Single analysis or Statistical analysis. For most in-bore balloting analyses, both types of analyses are performed. The Single analysis provides an in-depth look at the structural integrity of the projectile and gun barrel interaction whereas the Statistical analysis results examine the end effects of the projectile and gun barrel interaction is terms of dispersion.

In general, the major difference between the two analyses is that a Single analysis is run for one specific set of initial conditions whereas in a Statistical analysis, the initial conditions are randomized and several Single analyses are performed. The Statistical analysis provides a more realistic set of results in terms of projectile performance because the initial projectile orientation in the gun tube can not be pre-determined.

The benefits and capabilities of each analysis are listed below:

• Single Analysis
  • A Single Analysis provides a more in-depth set of results. For example, it provides bending moment and shear force at each node and the displacement and velocities at each node in the gun tube.
  • A Single Analysis can be used to validate/verify the overall BALANS model in terms of spring stiffnesses, material properties, and boundary conditions before moving on to a Statistical Analysis.
• Statistical Analysis
  • A Statistical analysis uses manufacturing tolerance information to provide a realistic estimate of dispersion.
  • The dispersion analysis is broken down into an in-bore balloting "budget" to provide additional insight.
