Balloting analyses have proven invaluable in the design and diagnostic evaluation of
the performance of a variety of projectile/gun systems. Most frequent use of the code
to date has been in the evaluation of APFSDS (Armor Piercing Fin Stabilized Discarding
Sabot) projectiles. This family of projectiles is particularly susceptible to
performance problems resulting from in-bore structural/dynamic loads. BALANS is
ideally suited to be used
as a design or problem-solving tool. It, combined with the PRODAS infrastructure, can
be used to rapidly evaluate the importance of several contributors to dispersion.
Further, it can be used to check the structural integrity of a round with sufficient
accuracy to help optimize a design. Following is an abbreviated list of projects
where BALANS
has been successfully used to solve critical design and/or performance issues.
- 30mm API penetrator deflection caused dispersion.
- 120mm long rod projectile structural integrity and dispersion.
- 105mm long rod projectile structural integrity.
- 25mm long rod projectile sabot discard and dispersion.
- Separable chamber shot start dynamic loads.
- 120mm mortar lateral loads from gas leakage - dispersion.
- 5.56mm projectile dispersion and structural integrity.
