Medium Caliber

For medium caliber (20mm-50mm) spin stabilized projectiles, the primary source of projectile inertial axis tilt with respect to the bore centerline is typically the in-bore clearance between the projectile bourrelets and barrel lands. For medium caliber, spin decoupled long rod projectiles, built-in in-bore clearances are only one of the primary causes of angular rates at muzzle exit, in-bore balloting (dynamic deflection of the rod with respect to the bore centerline due to non-straight bore centerline) and angular rates imparted by sabot discard can both add to the dispersion of the projectile. However, dispersion estimates made by the Muzzle Exit module should provide a good estimate of the minimum dispersion attainable by these designs.
